Business Casual for Women on a Budget

More often than not, graduates associate transitioning from student life into a business environment with the need to splurge on a whole new wardrobe. This approach may not only burn a hole in your pocket, but typically also results in accumulating a massive clutter of clothes you don’t need or even particularly want.

We have collated a list of business casual essentials to help you build a professional wardrobe without breaking the bank.

1. Capsule Wardrobe Essentials

The beauty of building a “capsule wardrobe” is that items may be mixed & matched/ layered with existing pieces to create a wide variety of looks. Examples of professional capsule wardrobe staples include beige, black or taupe blouses/ sweaters, LBD, well-fitted trousers, navy jeans, striped t-shirts, etc. Sweaters and shirts with a low neckline can be worn backwards and be made work-appropriate by finishing it off with the right accessories.

2. Simple Dresses

Whether it’s a comfortable shift dress or a classic LBD, dresses are an absolute must-have in your professional wardrobe. A mock turtleneck dress or a simple silk dress are very versatile and easy to layer. Wear them with heels to dress them up, or pair them with flats for a more casual vibe.

3. Black Blazer

A well-tailored black blazer can be a complete life-saver! It may be utilised to turn almost any casual piece into something more dressed up and mature.

4. Midi Skirt

A velvet or a faux leather midi skirt can be worn with a button-down shirt, a blouse, or even a plain t-shirt and a blazer.

5. Versatile Cardigan

In a city like Dublin where you are constantly rolling the dice with respect to the weather, you can never have too many good cardigans! We recommend ones in black, grey and brown.

6. Comfortable Pair of Pumps

It never hurt to have a fantastic pair of go-to block heel pumps in your wardrobe. We suggest black as they will go with anything you choose to wear. If you want to stock up, go for neutrals such as nude and brown.

7. Chic Flats

A pair of comfortable flats such as loafers or Oxfords are a step up from ballet flats, but still more comfortable than heels. They look chic and can dress down something on the slightly fancier side.

8. Polished Structured Bag

We highly recommend investing in a good quality structured bag such as a tote bag that offers a lot of space and pockets, including a compartment for your laptop.
